Nursing 402- Career Pathway Assessment
Purpose of Assignment:
The purpose of the assignment is to provide the student the opportunity to summarize in detail the development, implementation, and evaluation of an instructional intervention for a specific patient population or professional group.
Approach to Assignment:
To complete this assignment, I looked around my care environment and found an opportunity for teaching. One of Healthy People 2020’s goals includes improved communication. One of the ways to obtain that goal is with use of Bedside Reporting. My Employer attempted to make this happen but had been unsuccessful at the time of the assignment. I completed a needs assessment evaluation and then interviewed my potential leaners for demographic information, preferred teaching methods, and understanding of or use of the bedside reporting method. Afterwards, I put together and completed a teaching during a department in-service
Reason for Inclusion:
Working full time while returning to school for my BSN meant working with my department director to find a time to complete the teaching/oral presentation portion of my assignment. I included this assignment as to display my competencies in the core 8 and my oral presentation capabilities.
Curricular outcomes:
Critical thinking
. Uses decision-making skills in making clinical or professional judgements
When completing this assignment, I had to use my decision-making skills to select the correct issue to address, standards to base my teaching around and best approach to complete the teaching presentation.
. Evaluates nursing care outcomes through the acquisition of data and the questioning of inconsistencies
In this assignment, I had to use my data collected to predict the best method to reach all, if not the majority, of my target audience. After completing the teaching assignment, I had to complete a follow up to examine any inconsistences.

My teaching plan took the collected data and evidence-based practice to formulate my goals and action plan put into effect during the presentation.
Nursing Practice
· Establishes and/or utilizes outcome measures to evaluate the effectiveness of care
This assignment allowed me to use my knowledge of the nursing process to establish teaching outcome measures and goals to be able to evaluate the effectiveness of the teaching provided
Communication
· Expresses oneself and communicates effectively with diverse groups and disciplines using a variety of media in a variety of contexts
For this assignment, I had to effectively address a diverse group of my peers and higher members of my multidisciplinary team while using the lecture environment, hand-outs, hands-on activities, and independent study.
Teaching
· Uses information technologies and other appropriate methods to communicate health promotion, risk reduction, and disease prevention across the life span.
This assignment’s major goal was the communication of health promotion and risk reductions for our patient’s during shift change. I was able to use information technologies, the standard scope of practice and the KSA teaching method to complete the task.
· Evaluates the efficacy of health promotion and education modalities for use in a variety of settings with diverse populations
In the final portion of my summary of the teaching project, I had to evaluate the effectiveness of the health promotion and education modalities I used to complete my teaching to the diverse target audience.
Research
· Shares research findings with colleagues:
While undertaking this teaching project, I researched the appropriate evidence-based practice and standards of practice that made my solution to the problem, the supported solution. After finding the evidence, I shared my research with my colleagues.
· Evaluates research that focuses on the efficacy and effectiveness of nursing interventions
Before sharing my findings and formatting my teaching around the evidence, I evaluated the efficacy and effectiveness of the intervention of bedside reporting, and deemed the evidence valid and critical to be shared.
· Differentiates between descriptive nursing literature and published reports of nursing research.
This research assignment required me to provide information from nursing literature and published nursing research for evidence-based pracitce, teaching methods, data collection tools, and standards of practice.
Leadership
· Articulates the values of the profession and the role of the nurse as a member of the interdisciplinary health care team:
The teaching project allowed me to discuss the role of the nurse as a care provider, researcher, educator, advocate, and collaborator. This makes nurses a key member of the interdisciplinary team by providing safe and effective care to increase patient satisfaction and decreasing poor patient outcomes.

· Differentiates between general, institutional, and specialty-specific standards of practice to guide nursing care:
When completing this assignment, I had to review my department’s standards of practice and emergency specific standards of practice as a basis for my teaching.
· Demonstrates accountability for one’s own professional practice:
Education and remaining up to date on recent development are key factors of a nurse's profession. In this summary paper, I discuss how it is every nurse's responsibility and a staNdard of practice to complete this task and be accountable for providing the best care possible.
· Applies an ethical decision-making framework and legal guidelines to clinical situations that incorporate moral concepts, professional ethics, and advocacy for patient well-being and preferences.- maybe
Understanding the ethical decision-making framework and legal guidelines to safe nursing practice and the legal outcomes of poor outcomes occurring for patients, I was able to provide a moral concept idea and advocate for bedside reporting to reduce the risk to patient’s for harm and legal risk’s to nurses when harm occurs.
Culture
· Articulates an understanding of how human behavior is affected by culture, race. Religion, gender, lifestyle, and age:
With my teaching project, I had to take into account the culture, race, gender, age, and degree level to formulate my teaching methods. I had to understand that all of these factors affect learning and human behavior to teaching. Especially when I evaluated the previous teaching methods that were effect for each person in the past to select the most effective methods.
